Chances are he’ll end up with diabetes or thyroid problems, too. Will they pay the vet bills or have him put to sleep (or should I say killed)?

Oh dear. I adopted a kitty from the shelter almost a year ago, and he weighed 18 pounds. I took him immediately to my vet and, at my insistence, we put him on Science Diet R/D (reducing diet). The vet warned me weight loss would be slow and that he might not lose much at all, as he is a very LARGE cat (front paws the size of muffins). I measure his food daily, he gets NO extra snacks or “people food,” yet he is not noticeably losing weight. I worry, of course. I agree that obesity in cats is generally an owner problem (and a dangerous one), but what else can I do? I can’t cut back more than I have. The animal has to EAT.

my kitty is very fat but he has pancreaitis (sp) and I cant’ cut back the amount or type of food I am giving him, according to the vet (he is on prescription food). So I try to get him to play when I can, he tires very easily…don’t judge, my kitty is loved and loving. My family says “Oh put him down, he cant’ be happy!” but he comes and snuggles with me at night, making bread and ‘kissing’ my arm and sits in my lap for hours purring…so I don’t think he is suffering. I have another kitty that is normal sized.

You can only hope this IS Photoshopped. If an owner let a cat get that big, they should be prosecuted some way.
It’s not always easy to stop your pet gaining weight. For all you know, the owner’s trying her best to help him. Maybe he steals food and it’s hard to stop him. Maybe he has a health problem that stops him exercising. Maybe he has an under-active thyroid or something else that makes him gain weight. Maybe she just adopted him and he was already fat.
Unless this cat has a bad metabolism, the owner is one giant *****.

I think all of us know that he’s not healthy, and no one who regularly reads here actually think that he’s a healthy size. Whether it’s really animal abuse or not is something I don’t know where I fall on.
I find the caption funny, but yes. My first response when I see cats this fat is always sadness. Whether it’s a person who doesn’t know better (or doesn’t care), or a cat that’s sick, it’s still sad. But I generally don’t use the comment boards of humor sites to b**** about it.

A frend of mine put her kitteh on a diet (pleugh!) wen hims got overfluffy but he still put on weight. Turns out he was stealin’ fud from oluva uvver kitteh’s in teh nayborhood! It took a militry-style operashun to get him slim an perty agen.

Big boned or not, no animal, human or otherwise, should get that big. I’m fighting obesity myself, and it’s not fun. My back hurts, I can’t sleep right, I can’t focus during the day, and I’m pre-diabetic.

Well, I do, too. But I studied this big boy and noticed his eyes. I don’t think they are being pushed out of his head by the way he is being held up. He just has big eyeballs. They appear to be the same size as the woman’s eyes. I don’t think this has been shopped, either. The woman’s hands are not over large for the rest of her. This cat is just plain huge. He really is big boned. He paws are not fat, they are BIG! Big boy needs a job, say pulling a wagon to deliver newspapers.

Um….I realize that cat is probably pretty fat in real life, but it’s not as fat as it appears in that photoshopped image. Look at the woman’s hands….Unless she’s got disproportionately HUGE hands, the image has been doctored.
